How policeman masterminded Nollywood actress Nkiru’s kidnap
The puzzle surrounding the abduction of Nollywood actress and Special Assistant on Public Affairs to Governor Rochas Okoroch, Miss Nkiru Sylvanus, by unknown gunmen was yesterday resolved following the arrest of a policeman who allegedly led the kidnap operation.
The policeman (name withheld), attached to the Squadron 19 of the Mobile Police Force in Port Harcourt, was shot and arrested in Owerri by a combined team of men of the State Security Service (SSS) and the Army.
The policeman, until his arrest, was said to be the gang leader of a notorious kidnap syndicate that terrorized Abia, Imo and River states.
Explaining how Nkiru was abducted on December 16 last year, a reliable source among the security operatives that arrested the ring leader, told The Nation that the fair-skinned actress was trailed on the fateful day by a team of armed men in police uniform led by the arrested policeman who drove a tinted Sports Utility Jeep based on information supplied by another aide to the governor.
The source said the suspect had confessed to the crime and many other high-profile kidnap cases in the Southeast and beyond.
“The policeman was also recruiting and training other gang members and was using his police connections to beat security checks but he has come to the end of the road,” the source said.
The suspect, who is from Assa in the Ohaji/Egbema Council Area of Imo State, was allegedly arrested with the sum of N3.5 million believed to be part of the N8million ransom paid to secure the release of the thespian.
The arrest of the alleged kidnap kingpin was confirmed by the SSS Director of Operations in Imo State who did not give further details, but stated that “the suspect is in their custody over his involvement in the abduction of Nkiru.”
However, when contacted, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Vitalis Onugu, said he was away in Abuja, attending seminar and have not been briefed on the incident.
